When he was 10, his Gosain Hindu family had to move to Delhi owing to partition. His family lived as refugees in Vijay Nagar, Kingsway Camp and later moved to Patel Nagar area of New Delhi. He has two sons, Vishal Goswami and Kunal Goswami.
Kunal Goswami acted in few films like Kranti, Kalakar, Ghungru etc.
Manoj Kumar with son Vishal
Vishal tried his skills as a singer. Manoj's brother, Rajiv Goswami, also entered the film industry through the fillm 'Painter Babu'. None were able to gain any footing in Bollywood.
Career
After making a little-noticed début in Fashion in 1957, Manoj Kumar landed his first leading role in Kaanch Ki Gudia (1960) opposite Sayeeda Khan. He was only 19 when H.S. Rawail gave Manoj Kumar his first break as a hero in 1961 in the film ‘Kaanch Ki Gudiya’. The news about the new kid in tinsel town was so buoyant that Manoj signed on for four or five films even before his debut was released.
'Piya Milan Ki Aas' and 'Reshmi Roomal' followed, setting the stage for the Vijay Bhatt-directed 'Hariyali Aur Raasta' (1962) opposite Mala Sinha. This amazing film that made Manoj Kumar a colossal star.
Manoj Kumar then appeared with Sadhana in Raj Khosla's 'Woh Kaun Thi' (1964), and reunited with Vijay Bhatt and Mala Sinha in 'Himalaya Ki God Mein' (1965).
Manoj Kumar and Raj Khosla repeated their successful Actor-Director partnership with the film Do Badan, which was remembered for many reasons including Raj Khosla's great direction, Manoj Kumar and the heroine Asha Parekh's excellent display of histrionics, an outstanding musical score by Ravi, immortal songs by the lyricist Shakeel Badayuni, among others.
The patriotic hero - 'Bhaarat Kumar'
Manoj Kumar's image as the patriotic hero started with the 1965 film Shaheed, based on the life of Bhagat Singh, a martyr in the struggle for India's freedom.
After the Indo-Pakistani War of 1965, Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri asked him to create a film based on the popular slogan ' Jai Jawan Jai Kissan '. The result was Manoj Kumar's magnum opus and his directorial debut, 'Upkar' (1967). In it, he played both a soldier and a farmer.
The film was also noted for the famous song Mere Desh Ki Dharti, written by Gulshan Bawra, composed by Kalyanji-Anandji and sung by Mahendra Kapoor. Upkaar was a hit and won Kumar his first Filmfare Best Director Award.
This was the first film by Manoj Kumar where he stars as Bharat. Soon he starred again as Bharat in his home productions Purab Aur Paschim (1970), Roti Kapda Aur Makaan (1974) and Kranti (1981). Due to these films and patriotic films, he was nicknamed as ' Bhaarat Kumar '.
(1965 -1972)
After dabbling in various roles in the late 1960s, Manoj Kumar returned to patriotic themes in Purab Aur Paschim (1970), in which life in the East and West are juxtaposed. In 1972, he starred in Be-Imaan (for which he won the Filmfare Best Actor Award) .
'Shor' was another good film. He directed and starred in Shor (1972). Shor, opposite Nanda, was not a huge box office success, but it did feature the memorable song Ek Pyar Ka Nagma Hai, a duet by Lata Mangeshkar and Mukesh, which was composed by Laxmikant Pyarelal and written by Santosh Anand.
Later career (1974 - 1999)
The mid-1970s saw Manoj Kumar star in three hit films:
* Roti Kapda Aur Makaan (1974) was a social commentary featuring an all-star cast including Zeenat Aman, Shashi Kapoor and Amitabh Bachchan that won him his second Filmfare Award for Best Director.
* Sanyasi (1975) had Manoj Kumar and Hema Malini in the lead roles of a religious-themed comedy.
* And Dus Numbri (1976) also gave Manoj Kumar and Hema top billing.
* In 1981,Manoj Kumar reached the peak of his career when he got the opportunity to direct his idol, Dilip Kumar, as well as star in Kranti, a story about the struggle for Indian independence in the 19th century. Kranti was the last notable successful film in his career. He also starred in the hit Punjabi film Jat Punjabi.
After Kranti, Manoj Kumar's career began to decline in the 1980s as all of his films failed at the box office. In 1989 he cast Pakistani actors Mohammad Ali and Zeba in his film Clerk which was considered to be a groundbreaking event. He quit acting after his appearance in the 1995 film Maidan-E-Jung. His son, Kunal Goswami, tried to revive the patriotic theme and was directed by Kumar in the 1999 film Jai Hind which was a flop. Manoj Kumar was awarded the Filmfare Lifetime Achievement Award that same year.
Politics
Like many other Bollywood stars, Manoj Kumar decided to enter politics following his retirement. Before the 2004 general election in India, it was announced that he had officially joined the ranks of the Shiv Sena. After Upkar he was offered a ticket from Congress but he refused.
Style
Controversy
His trademark hand-covering-the-face was very popular and continues to be the butt of jokes of latter day stand-up comedians. In 2007, the Shah Rukh Khan's film ' Om Shanti Om ' featured the lead character pretending to be Manoj Kumar so as to sneak into a movie premiere, by holding his hand over his face.
Manoj Kumar filed a lawsuit, which was settled out of court.

** Interesting Facts : -
* As a youth, he admired Bollywood superstar Dilip Kumar, and decided to name himself Manoj Kumar after Dilip's character in Shabnam (1949).
* 'Kranti' was his crowning glory. He fulfilled his desire to direct Dilip Kumar, who he had admired and imitated. He proved to the world that he was the only director who didn't let Dilip Kumar interfere in his film. 'Kranti' was totally a Manoj Kumar film, it didn't have the slightest stamp of Dilip Kumar, usually present in the latter's films. Manoj's diktat to all his stars was 'Aap aao apni marzi se, lekin jao meri marzi se'. He was the King and in those days, he was offered a crore of rupees for acting and directing an outside film. He rejected these offers. He worked at pace leisurely. Not for him the hurried shots and rush jobs.
* 'Shor' was another good film. He picked up a two para news-story and made a film out of it. The story was about one of those ironies of life: a father cycled non-stop for 14 days, to break a record and win a cash prize to pay for a surgery for his mute son. When the son regains his voice, the father meets with an accident and loses his hearing! Few among the Indian film makers could make a film with this theme, but Manoj did.
* Manoj Kumar has privately claimed credit for the direction of 'Woh Kaun Thi' and some other films - but the Manoj Kumar stamp is visible even in 'Shaheed', 'Beimaan', 'Dus Numbri' and 'Yaadgar'.
* When Manoj Kumar showed 'Shaheed' to the then Prime Prime minister Late Sri Lal Bahadur Shastri, he was very much pleased and inspired him to make a film on 'Jai Jawan Jai Kisan ' - a slogan given by Shastri Ji.
* It was with the genuine pride for his country's leaders that he had installed Nehru, Shastri and Indira on a pedestal along with Bhagat Singh and Gandhi Ji in his films.

Story:
It is the year 1916 in India, a year that Sardar Kishan Singh, his wife, their children, including son, Bhagat, and their parents will never forget, for it was the day his brother, Ajit Singh, sang out against the British, was arrested, escaped from prison, and has never been heard of again.
This biopic begins with a young Bhagat Singh growing up in colonial India pressed under British rule. The bruise of heartache clear in her voice, his staunchly nationalistic mother (Kamini Kaushal) explains to her little boy that the British who had originally come as guests are now hamare desh ke maalik (owners our of country). The young boy asks pertinently, "Hum bahar kyon nahin nikal dete (Why don't we throw them out)?"
He is inspired by his mother and by his freedom fighter uncle who gives up his family life to continue his struggle from outside the country.
His undeniable earnestness (he holds his hand unflinchingly over an open flame) convinces freedom fighter Chandrashekhar Azad to let him join the freedom fightiting movement.
It is then that an unarmed freedom fighter Lala Lajpat Rai, protesting the Simon Commission, is killed by Police lathicharge. Bhagat Singh teams up with fellow patriots Sukhdev and Rajguru and gets involved in a plot to shoot British officer Scott.
Bhagat Singh, Chandrashekar Ajad, Rajguru, Sukhdev, and Jaygopal avenge Lala Lajpat Rai's death by killing another Britisher, the Assistant Commissioner Saunders. When a major police hunt is announced, they flee, especially Bhagat, as he has been identified as the Sikh with the turban. Bhagat takes off his turban, shaves off his beard. Donning a Western disguise and enlisting the help of his bhabhi (Nirupa Roy) to pretend she is his wife, Singh makes good his escape and continues to be active in the freedom movement .
Time passes Bhagat Singh along with his comrade Batukeshwar Dutt decide to employ the totally nonviolent protest of throwing a bomb (which does not hurt anyone) in in central assembly of British Parliament in order to warn the british government that Bharat ( India) is awakeing. They willingly surrender to the police. They aim to spread ' Inquilab Zindabad ' message to the masses. Justice, however, is denied them in a keenly contested court case and they are sentenced to life imprisonment. They are sent to jail.
His best friend and comrade Sukhdev and his other comrades too get arrested ,except Chandrashekhar Ajad. Jaygopal becomes apporver of government and tells everything about revolutionaries and their plans to the British. All others are arrested and sent to Lahore central jail and are prosecuted by British for killing Saunders .
Jailor tortures Bhagat singh and Sukhdev to become apporver of government but in vain . Meanwhile after seeing the maltreatment of Bhartiya prisoners Bhagat singh and other Revolutionaries announces Hunger strike ,Revolutionary Yadintranath das becomes Martyr in this Strike ,finally Government gives up and stops the maltreatment in jail.
Lahore conspiracy case of Saunders killing continues ,Bhagat singh and his comrades gives a wonderful speech against British imperialism,Chandrashekhar Azad and Bhagavati Charan Vohra tries to release Bhagat singh and his comrades but it is in vain and Bhagavati Bhaiya Becomes Martyr in this attempt .
After some time The Great Chandrashekhar Azad also becomes martyr during his encounter with englishmen in Alfred park. Bhagat singh ,Rajguru and Sukhdev are given death sentence for waging a war against England . Fearing from public oppositon Sukhdev ,Bhagat Singh and Rajguru are secretly sent to the gallows a day before and become martyrs, singing --
"O Mera Rang De Basanti Chola "

Interesting Facts:
* Shaheed was the first film of Manoj Kumar as a patriotic hero.his small-budget black-and-white film had enormous impact, besides laying the foundation for Manoj's famous flag-waving ' Mr Bharat' image that was strengthened by a string of subsequent films like Upkar, Purab Aur Paschim and Kranti.
* Shaheed presented nationalist fervour through a deeply human story rooted in emotion.
* The film was shot on a tight budget in black-and-white when colour was already predominant. It won three National Awards and was appreciated by then Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shashtri.
* Two famous villains Pran and Prem Chopra played positive roles in the film. Pran was the leading villain yet did the role for a pittance. When Manoj made his directorial debut with Upkar next, he gave Pran a positive role of 'Malang Chacha' that changed the course of his career.
* The success of Shaheed enabled 1940s and 1950s star Kamini Kaushal to make a comeback and start a successful second innings in Hindi films, now as a mother.
* Prem Dhawan made a name for himself as a lyricist in the fifties and sixties with such hit songs as Seene mein sulagte hai armaan (Taraana), and Chhodo kal ki baatein (Hum Hindustani), when the makers of Shaheed asked the multifaceted virtuoso to compose music for their film.
* Prem Dhawan distinguished himself with the music of Shaheed. Later, when he composed for Pavitra Paapi, he came up with notable numbers like Teri duniya se hoke majboor chala.
* Besides Shaheed, Manoj had two other hits, Himalay Ki God Mein and Gumnaam, in 1965 and this trio firmly established him as a star.
* The women in the film come off as strong and pragmatic. Despite their own miseries, they don't weaken Bhagat Singh's resolve. Nirupa Roy is particularly adept at mixing emotion with earthy practicality. This glimpse of women power calls to mind the role of countless women in India's freedom struggle.
* Manoj Kumar plays Bhagat Singh with earnestness and drops his studied mannerisms. He remembers lying on blocks of ice for over 24 hours for the torture scene. “For four months, my back was as dead as that of a monkey,” he says. He still has the burn mark on his left palm that he got during the candle scene. “We didn’t have the technology or the gadgets to shoot all this. I wanted to do it this way since this was the only way I could get rid of the guilt I had for not being able to do the role when I was a kid,” he says.

Wonderful Dialogues :
Manoj has some well-written dialogues :-
** For Kehar Singh (Pran):-
* Bhagat Singh's ability to inspire his fellow human beings is cogently conveyed through Pran's character who, before being sent to the gallows, says:
"Zindagi mein kisi nek aadmi se haath nahin milaya. Milayega haath ?"
** For Bhagat Singh (Manoj Kumar) :-
* When the jailor (Madan Puri) pleads with him to give in, excusing himself by saying, "Main majboor hoon ,"
Manoj retorts, "Aap hukum se majboor hain," (pause) "main dil se majboor hoon "
---------------------------------------------
* Shaheed very effectively captures the camaraderie between the young freedom fighters --- in the hearty greetings Singh accords to his compatriots in jail. They hail each other with, "Lagta hai barso baad mile hai ,".
The jailor retorts, "Fiqr mat karo ab barso saath rehna padega ."
** For Bhagat Singh's mother (Kamini Kaushal):-
* " Aap ko to shaq hai aur mujhe yakeen hai, main apne Bhagat ko achchhi tarah janti hoon .Ye usi ka kaam hai."
---------------------------------------------
* " Apne desh liye ek baar marna sau janmon ke barabar hota hai."
---------------------------------------------
* ' Main apne Bhagat ko janti hoon, akash jhuk sakta hai mera Bhagat nahi juk sakta."
---------------------------------------------
* "Jante ho, mere Bhagat ne azadi ko biyah lane ki saugandh khai hai ,aaj uski shadi ki taiyariyan ho rahi hain, kal mera beta dulha banega ,uski barat sajegi, kabhi aisa bhi hua hai ki bete ki shadi ho aur ma baap shareek na ho,log kya kahenge, biradari kya kahegi."
** For Durga Bhabhi (Nirupa Roy) :-
*When she remarks on western avtar of Bhagat Singh :-
" Angrez isliye nahi kahoongi ki unse hamari dushmani hai."
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Wonderful Shots :-
* There is a gooseflesh-inducing moment — the candle scene in which Singh puts his hand on an open flame to prove his earnestness to Chandrashekhar Azad, as Mohammad Rafi sings Ae Watan… humko teri kasam.
* The first time Singh is seen in a Western avatar — felt hat, moustache, overcoat is also a favourite moment.
* The auteur touches are evident in the upside-down framing of the shots when Sukhdev is being tortured.
* The roti burning unattended on the stove as Singh's mother runs out when she hears of Saunders' assassination.
* The hooded-eye encounter between Sukhdev and Bhagat Singh when each is led to believe the other has become a sarkari gawah (government witness).
* When Bhagat Singh, Sukhdev and Rajguru, all dressed in black, go for their final walk singing " Mera Rang De Basanti Chola ", and the camera focuses on the words “Live and Let Live” written on the wall of the jail.
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
** Wonderful Songs:-
One can never forget such inspiring lyrics, music and voices of the songs like -
* Ishk Azadi Se Ashikon Ne Kiya
Dekh Lena Use Hum Biyah Layenge
---------------------------------------------
* Hum Na Dekhenge Kal Ki Baharein To Kya
Tumko To Wo Baharein Dikha Jayenge
---------------------------------------------
* Teri Pooja Ki Thali Mein Laye Hain Hum
Phool Har Rang Ke Aaj HarDal Ke
--------------------------------------------
* Mera Rang De Basanti Chola
Maye Rang De Basanti Chola
---------------------------------------------
* Pagri Sambhal Jatta
Pagri Sambhal Oye
---------------------------------------------
* Laut Kar Aa Sake Na Jahan Mein To Kya
Yaad Ban Kar Dilon Mein To Aa Jayenge
etc.etc.

Making of Shaheed :
{ As told by Manoj Kumar to Lata Khubchandani }
When I was making my film on legendary hero and freedom fighter Shaheed Bhagat Singh, I had collected a lot of material. All of it could not be used - the length of the film posed a restriction.
Before I made Shaheed (1965), two films on Bhagat Singh had already been made. Shaheed-E-Azam Bhagat Singh directed by Jagdish Gautam with Prem Adeeb as hero (he was termed Lord Rama after acting in Ram Rajya), and Shaheed Bhagat Singh by veteran director Vishram Bedekar with Shammi Kapoor as Bhagat Singh and Premnath as Chandrashekhar Azad.
Both the films flopped. So it was not hot news at the box-office when we started making Shaheed. But (publicist-journalist) Kewal P. Kashyap wanted to make the film.
It had an almost nil star cast. There was the role of one Kehar Singh. I don't know whether these films being made today know from where I had taken this character.
We met Bhagat Singh's mother and brothers quite often in Chandigarh during the making of Shaheed. When his mother was hospitalised, Kewal and I went to visit her. That is where we met the legendary Batukeshwar Dutt, who had accompanied Bhagat Singh in the Central Assembly bomb blast.
I spent a number of days with Batukeshwar Dutt and learnt a lot from him about Bhagat Singh. I was surprised and sorry to read in the papers recently that said they (Batukeshwar Dutt and Bhagat Singh) had formed the Hindustan Socialist Republic Army with Chandrashekhar Azad as commander-in-chief.
I was and am still very close to Manmath Raj Gupta, who has written about 50 books on the revolution. Gupta was involved in the Kakori case (1926) and imprisoned, too.
I remember Kamini Kaushal had said goodbye to films when I was making Shaheed. But I narrated the story to her and convinced her to do my film.
The other great man who obliged me was Pran. He was so fascinated by Kehar Singh's character when I narrated it to Raj Khosla during the shooting of Do Badan that he asked me who was playing the role. I said I didn't know. He said, 'When you start the film send the producer to me.'
I told the producer what Pranji had said. He said he couldn't afford Pran. I said there was no harm in meeting him and telling him that. So he went to Pranji and told him we could not afford to pay him.
He returned 45 minutes later, jumping with joy. When I asked him what happened, he said Pran had offered to do the role for a mere Rs 7,000!
In Ludhiana, Pran must have spent Rs 200,000 to 300,000, on entertaining the unit. We had 80 junior and main artistes. We shot the film at Ludhiana Central Jail. We were there for more than two months. We were short of funds and would shoot with lights you find in the chaurahas [streets], etc.
Bhagat Singh was in Lahore Central Jail but we could not shoot there because the relationship between India and Pakistan wasn't good - exactly like it is today.
Those days, music composers Shanker-Jaikishan, Ravi, O P Nayyar were ruled. K Kashyap was their publicist but I insisted I wanted Prem Dhawan. When we went to him and told him we were making this film, he said, "Will you give me the opportunity to write the lyrics?" I said I wanted him to compose the music, too.
He was hesitant since he had not composed for an entire film before, but I insisted. He finally agreed and gave his first musical composition for my film. The music is still popular, and haunting.
When the film was completed, there were few buyers. When they did buy it, it was on their own terms. But its success grew over a period of time. Shaheed was the first film to win three National Awards. I was the first writer to get the award for story writing.
Since there was no official document on Bhagat Singh my story became an official document.
I had the privilege of meeting Bhagat Singh's brothers and I have slept on his mother's lap. When I first met the family Kultarji ( Bhagat Singh's younger brother ), took me to his mother and asked her, 'Maaji does he resemble our brother or not?'
She smiled and said, "To a very great extent?"
I remember she was unwell once and refused to take medication. Kultar took me aside and told me to tell her to take her medicine.
I went to her and said, "Maaji ek prarthna hai (Maaji I have a request)."
She said, "Kya bete, bol (Yes son, tell me)?"
I said, "Dawaayi kha leejiye (Please have your medicines)."
She replied, "Accha tu bolta hai to kha leti hoon (Okay if you say so)."
We then went to Chandigarh and show them the rushes. Batukeshwar Dutt saw it. So did Kultar Singh and family and other revolutionaries like Gulab Singh.
She was pleased with the film. That is why she came for the awards function.
My father had gone to Chandigarh to bring Bhagat Singh's mother for the awards ceremony. Then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was also present. When David Abraham announced Bhagat Singh's mother's name, there was a standing ovation. I remember Indiraji had tears in her eyes.
I gave all the award money I got to Bhagat Singh's mother.

Interesting Facts:
* Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shastri praised his earlier film Shaheed and enthused Manoj Kumar to make a film on 'Jai Jawaan Jai Kissan' slogan. The slogan shaped into Manoj Kumar's official debut as a director for Upkar, where he believably played both a jawan and a kisan. A huge hit, Upkar made Manoj an authority on screen patriotism .
* Manoj Kumar had the courage to cast Pran in his first positive character role.
* The film won the top spot at the box office in 1967 due to wonderful shots, meaningful dialogues and background music , powerful songs and their beautiful picturisation.
* Madan Puri played the main villain with ease, full ability and command. This is one of his best films. Audience has not seen such a villain till date.
* The film won several major awards.
* Leading lady Asha Parekh had an image as a dancing heroine. Star and filmmaker Manoj Kumar wanted to change her image, since she was playing a doctor promoting planned parenthood, so he gave her only two dance moves in the entire film.
* Manoj Kumar shushed Asha Parekh when she complained about the number of takes for an early morning shot. She got upset and stopped talking to him, but she completed her work on the film. However, she didn't attend the film's premiere, even though its success raised her box-office stature. Two years later, Manoj and Asha started talking to each other again on the set of their next film "Sajan" (1969). In 2009, Asha referred to Manoj as a "very intelligent person."
* Manoj Kumar said that a "half-lit Asha Parekh" is one of the most beautiful images that he has ever seen on film.

Manoj and Dilip Kumar in Aadmi

Honour:
* It was appreciated by the then Prime Minister Lal Bahadur Shashtri.

---------------------------------------------
* Pagri Sambhal Jatta
Pagri Sambhal Oye
---------------------------------------------
* Laut Kar Aa Sake Na Jahan Mein To Kya
Yaad Ban Kar Dilon Mein To Aa Jayenge
etc.etc.

Making of Shaheed :
{ As told by Manoj Kumar to Lata Khubchandani }
