Silk Smitha

DOB --                   December 2, 1960(1960-12-02)

POB --                   Eluru, Andhra Pradesh, India

Died --                   September 23, 1996(1996-09-23) (aged 35)

Occupation--          Actress

Years active--       1979 - 1996

Silk Smitha (2 December 1960 – 23 September 1996) was an Indian film actress. She became a movie extra and subsequently the most wanted heroine of the early 80s. The sobriquet "Silk" came in 1979, with her first Tamil film Vandi Chakkaram, in which she played a bar girl named Silk. In a career spanning 17 years, she did over 450 films in Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi languages.

 Born as Vijayalakshmi, in a poor family in Eluru, Andhra Pradesh, Smitha left school after her fourth standard due to financial constraints. Due to her good looks, she was ‘exploited’ by men, thus her family married her off at a very young age. But when she started getting ill-treated by her husband and in-laws, she ran away to Madras (now known as Chennai) and started living with an aunt.

 Career
========

She started her career as a touch-up artiste for a B-grade actor, and soon got a break in small character roles. Later she was discovered by Indian director Vinu Chakravarthy at a flour mill. He renamed her Smitha and his wife taught her English, while she learned dancing from another teacher.

Smitha made her debut in the Malayalam film Inaye Thedi in 1979 Though soon due to her overt sex appeal, she switched to roles of cabaret dancers and vamp roles and thus got type casted.  After garnering much notice and acclaim with her first major role in the Tamil film Vandi Chakkaram, in 1979, Smitha assumed the screen name "Silk", after her character's name in the movie. However after it became a big hit, she could not escape typecasting, severely limiting her range throughout her career.
Silk Smitha went on to star in Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada and a few Hindi films.

 Her dance numbers, semi-nude scenes and bold performances in films like Moondru Mugam made her the ultimate symbol of sensuality in Telugu, Kannada, Tamil, Malayalam cinema. Her item numbers in films like Amaran were also celebrated at the box office. Some film critics, historians and journalists have referred to her as a "soft porn" actress. A vast majority of her movies are softcore and a common theme is her playing a freakishly strong agent in skimpy bikinis beating up huge thugs.

Even in the rare non-sexual roles, she impressed critics and audiences, such as her role of a wife hurt by her husband's infidelity in Alaigal Oivathillai (1981).  One of her films, Layanam (1989), has earned a cult status in the Indian adult film industry, and was dubbed in numerous languages including, Hindi as Reshma Ki Jawani (2002), which too acquired cult status. Her most respected film is Moondram Pirai by Balu Mahendra, who he remade it in Hindi as Sadma, with much of the cast, including Sridevi, Kamal Hassan, and Silk Smitha reprising their roles.

At the peak of her career, according to Tamil film historian, Randor Guy, "Films that had lain in cans for years were sold by the simple addition of a Silk Smitha song.”.

 Death
======

In 1996, Smitha was found dead in her Chennai apartment. The previous year she had tried to become a film producer. Financial problems, disillusionment in love and an alcohol dependency apparently led to depression. It is suspected that Smitha committed suicide, but the circumstances of her death remain a mystery.

 In 2011, a biopic on Silk Smitha's life, titled  "The Dirty Picture” , is being produced in Hindi by Ekta Kapoor, directed by Milan Luthria  starring Vidya Balan as Smitha which is slated to release on Smitha's birthday on December 2, 2011.

The Dirty Picture is a Bollywood biopic on the life of the South Indian movie siren Silk Smitha, directed by Milan Luthria and produced by Shobha Kapoor and Ekta Kapoor, together after their last hit Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai (2010). The film stars Vidya Balan, Naseeruddin Shah, Tusshar Kapoor and Emraan Hashmi in lead roles. It is released in India on December 2, 2011 on the birth anniversary of Smitha.

Theme

The film is an account of the life of the doomed sex symbol Silk Smitha and Indian sexploitation films of the 1980s era, especially in Tamil cinema. As reported by The Times Of India, "The Dirty Picture will not focus on the sleaze but the tragedy behind the mask of the sex symbol who provided titillation to thousands of viewers but died a lonely and tragic death."

 Production & Development

Ekta Kapoor launched the film with director Milan Luthria soon after their collaboration Once Upon A Time In Mumbaai became a super-hit. She said that The Dirty Picture would be India's answer to the Academy Award nominated film Boogie Nights. Later in a press conference, Kapoor clarified that neither of Balaji's forthcoming film, Ragini MMS nor The Dirty Picture were "porn films", as they were made out to be.

She has gone on record to add, "I would be surprised if I don't get unbelievable critical acclaim for The Dirty Picture and a national award for my actress, Vidya Balan. The movie has one of the most well-written scripts I have come across and a lot of youngsters in my office have looked at it with great admiration." She also pointed out that the purpose of the film was neither to justify nor criticize Smitha's life, but for the audience to live her life.

Director Milan Luthria --

"The story chose me! It was Ekta’s idea, she had asked the writer to write a story based on this and once it was done they casually asked me to go through it. She wanted a first time director to do it as it wasn’t a big canvas and did not have a big budget, but when I read the story I was bowled over. I told her I wanted to direct it, it was exclusive material — not those typical masala films and I didn’t want anyone else directing it"

When screenwriter Rajat Arora initially started working and took cues from producer Ekta Kapoor, it was seen as much smaller film in scope, primarily looking into the soft-pornography phenomenon of the 1980s, but gradually as the work progressed, it grew to also trace the controversial romances of Smitha, through a fictionalized biopic. Further while researching for the film director Milan Luthria and screenwriter Rajat Arora, found little material in the film magazines of the period,  thus they derived much of the details of her life, from anecdotes, met-at-a-party stories, quick tea-break chats, and fictionalized them. Apart from depicting the pomp of the Tamil film industry, it also takes up issues like, money management by actors, how they got cheated, "their string of broken relationships, led lonely lives and met with tragic ends".

 Casting
========
When Vidya Balan was narrated the script and shown sketches of what she needed to wear for the portrayal, including hot pants, low necks and petticoats (without the saree that Vidya is so fond of), she was uncomfortable. We couldn't have found anyone better than Vidya for this role. It's a casting that very few would think is viable because it is going to be nothing like Vidya has done before. But I am confident she will push the envelope as far as she can".
Regarding the criticism that Balan's character might evoke, Luthria clarified, "I wanted Vidya to know that what she's doing is not crass or crude but can be shown aesthetically in a sensual manner with a touch of class. What her character does, is not cheap.". As a reference point, he also asked Balan to study 'similar themed' films such as Burlesque and Chicago. Balan also underwent salsa training to fine-tune herself with Smitha's languid body language.
Next, Naseeruddin Shah was cast as an ageing South Indian superstar with "hideous wigs, dark glasses and painted-on mustaches". He will also be seen shaking a leg to a "fast dance number" in the film, a full 22 years after he last did it in the song "Tirchi Topiwale" from Tridev (1989).
Tusshar Kapoor and Emraan Hashmi have also been cast in lead roles. While Kapoor will be seen playing a script-writer and Smitha's love interest, the nature of Hashmi's role is still unknown.

 Filming
=======
Filming was to begin on 20 May 2011; a week after the release of Kapoor's Ragini MMS. But due to certain production delays, it began a week later. Balan, being a spiritual person, organized a puja on the sets before principal photography could begin.
The first leg of filming took place at Mumbai's Film City where an elaborate set re-creating Chennai (then Madras) of the 80's, was set up. The second schedule was shot in Ramoji Film City in Hyderabad. The song 'Ishq Sufiyana' was shot at bidar fort in bidar, karnataka. The filming was completed in end September, before it went into post-production, ahead of the December release.

 Marketing
=========
The Dirty Picture was the most anticipated film of 2011, and its first look and a short teaser were launched online on 26 August 2011. The enthusiastic response even prompted its producers to consider a sequel. The film's trailer on Youtube got over 880,000 hits within a few days. Meanwhile, the theatrical trailer was launched on August 30 at a single screen cinema in Bandra. The space was especially decorated to recreate the retro era. Since the film is set in the 80s, a time when multiplexes did not exist, the producers thought it would be apt to disclose the first look at a single screen.

AP HC dismisses plea challenging release of 'Dirty Picture'
PTI | 10:12 PM,Dec 01,2011

Hyderabad, Dec 1 (PTI) The Andhra Pradesh High Court today dismissed a petition challenging the release of Vidya Balan starrer "Dirty Picture" tomorrow. Justice Vilas Afzulpurkar upheld the contention of the respondent Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) that the certificate to the movie was granted as per the provisions of Cinematographic Act, 1952, as well as related notification of the Central government, CBFC counsel B Mayur Reddy said. The judge had earlier reserved his order after hearing the petitioner and respondents. Petitioner Vadlapatla Vara Prasada Rao, brother of Silk Smitha, the Telugu actress who committed suicide a few years ago, had contended that the film was made based on the life of his sister and filmmakers never obtained permission from her family. He sought staying of the grant of CBFC certificate as the film was "defamatory, obscene and vulgar". The court in its orders noted that if the petitioner felt that if there is anything defamatory in the movie with regard to depiction of his sister's (life) in a bad light he could file a suit for defamation. In his arguments, Reddy had submitted that the film is a "fictional account and does not represent any individual as such". "The film is all about one actress called Reshma and her struggles in Bollywood. She succeeds initially but later fails and commits suicide." The judge also agreed to the contention of S Niranjan Reddy, appearing for Balaji Telefilms that the film "does not refer to any individual and it is not a autobiography of any person. The producers also stated about this in the disclaimer at the beginning of the film". Later Rao said he may approach the Andhra Pradesh State Human Rights Commission over the issue. "My effort has been to protect the prestige of my sister. More so, she is dead. Had they consulted us, we would have given correct details of her life," he told PTI. Directed by Milan Luthria and produced by Ekta Kapoor, the movie also stars Emraan Hashmi, Naseeruddin Shah and Tusshar Kapoor.
