Shammi Kapoor 'THE YAHOO MAN'

 Shammi  Kapoor 'The Yahoo Man'

Shammi Kapoor was hailed as one of the finest actors that Hindi cinema had ever produced.Extremely versatile as an actor, he was the leading star of Hindi cinema during the late 1950s as well as the 1960s.
He was the tall, athletic and green-eyed dancing star who revolutionised the image of Hindi film heroes in the 1950s and 1960s with his carefree and flamboyant personality. The recipe for his success was a makeover as a flamboyant yet lovable lover boy and an uninhibited style of dancing.
His style his dance his clothes, his puffed hair style that lazily yet provocatively would often fall on his foreheadall became images that every young around the country wanted to emulate.

Early Life
========

He was given the name Shamsher Raj Kapoor at his birth in Mumbai to film and theatre actor Prithviraj Kapoor, Shammi was the second of the three sons born to Prithviraj (the other two being Raj Kapoor and Shashi Kapoor), both of whom were, like their father, successful Bollywood actors.
Though born in Mumbai, he spent a major portion of his childhood in Kolkata, where his father was involved with New Theatres Studios, acting in films. It was in Kolkata that he did his Montessory and Kindergarten. After coming back to Mumbai, he first went to St. Joseph's Convent (Wadala) and then, to Don Bosco School. Shammi Kapoor finished his schooling from New Era School, at Hughes Road.
Shammi Kapoor had a short stint at Ruia College, in Matunga, Mumbai, after which he joined his father’s theatrical company "Prithvi Theatres".
He entered the cinema world in 1948, as a junior artiste, at a salary of Rs. 150 per month, stayed with Prithvi Theatres for the next four years.

 Film career
==========

He made his debut in Bollywood in the year 1953, when the film Jeevan Jyoti was released. It was directed by Mr. Mahesh Kaul and Chand Usmani was Kapoor’s first heroine.

Shammi Kapoor started out with serious roles but with Filmistan's Nasir Hussain directed Tumsa Nahin Dekha (1957) opposite Ameeta and Dil Deke Dekho (1959) with Asha Parekh, he attained the image of a light-hearted, stylish playboy. Tall, athletic, lively, fair complexioned, green-eyed and with handsome features- Shammi was a heartthrob, and his good looks and physique complemented his image.
With Junglee (1961) his new image was cemented and his subsequent films were all in this genre. He particularly chose Mohammed Rafi as his playback voice. Though in his early career he had often played second fiddle to established heroines like Madhubala in films such as Rail Ka Dibba(1953) and Naqab(1955) and opposite Suraiya in Shama Parwana(1954), producers after 1960, loved pairing Shammi with new heroines, and three of them became huge stars in their own right: Asha Parekh, Saira Banu, and Sharmila Tagore. Of all his heroines, he said that Sharmila Tagore, Rajshree, and Asha Parekh were easy to work with. He and Asha Parekh were paired together in four films, the most successful being the murder mystery Teesri Manzil (1966).
In the early fifties he accepted serious roles in women oriented films like Shama Parwana (1954), comedy flick Mem Sahib (1956) and thrillers like Miss Coca Cola (1956) and Chor Bazar(1954), which were all successful at box office and in tragic love story Mirza Sahiban (1957) (a box office flop), but did not gain recognition and fame among the masses.Other than the above hits, he had fifteen films as flops to his credit till 1957. It was only after triple success of Tumsa Nahi Dekha (1957), Ujala and Dil Dil Deke Deko (both 1959), that he became popular with the audience and became a star. The other hits in late fifties included Mujrim(1958), Char Dil Char Rahen, Raat ke Raahi(1959). In the first half of the 1960s,Shammi Kapoor was seen in successful films like College Girl, Basant, Singapore, Boy Friend, Professor, Dil Tera Diwana, ‘Pyar Kiya To Darna Kya’, China Town, Kashmir Ki Kali, Bluff Master, Janwar and Rajkumar. Although nominated before, in 1968, he received the first Filmfare Best Actor award of his career for the film Bramhachari.
In the 1970s, Shammi Kapoor’s weight problem proved an obstacle in his path of success and ended his career as a romantic hero. One of his last hits, in which he played the lead role, was Andaz (1971).
Shammi turned into a successful supporting actor in the 70's, playing Saira Banu's father in Zameer (1974), when he had been her leading man a decade earlier in Junglee (1961) and Bluff Master (1964) and playing Amitabh Bachchan's foster father in Parvarish.
He also directed Manoranjan (1974) a copy of Irma La Douce and in which he played a supporting role himself and Bundal Baaz (1976), but neither were successful commercially though got critical acclaims and were hailed as classics and to be ahead of its time.
In the 1980s and 1990s, he continued to play supporting roles in many films and won a Filmfare Best Supporting Actor Award for his performance in Vidhaata (1982). He eventually cut down on film appearances by the late 1990s and early 2000s and made his appearances in the 1999 Salman Khan and Urmila Matondkar starring Jaanam Samjha Karo, 2002 release Waah! Tera Kya Kehnaand delayed 2006 release Sandwich. He made his last appearance in Imtiaz Ali 's next directorial venture Rockstar co-starring his grand-nephew Ranbir Kapoor, the grandson of his brother Raj Kapoor.

Personal life
=============

Shammi Kapoor met Geeta Bali in 1955, during the shooting of the film ‘Rangeen Raaten’. He was the leading actor and she played a cameo. They fell in love, but since she was a year older to him and had acted with his elder brother and father, they were skeptical. Four months after they first met, they married at Banganga Temples, near Napean Sea Road of Mumbai. Hari Walia as the sole witness. They informed their parents only after their marriage.
Shammi and Geeta lived a life of bliss in the coming years. They had a son, Aditya Raj Kapoor, on 1 July 1956, at Shirodkar's Hospital, Mumbai, a year after they were married. Five years later, in 1961, they had a daughter, Kanchan ( who is married to Ketan Desai).
Tragedy struck in 1965, during the filming of Teesri Manzil. Geeta died of small pox, leaving Shammi with two small children.
In 1969, he married his second wife Neela Devi Gohil from the former royal family of Bhavnagar in Gujarat.
Shammi Kapoor was the founder and chairman of Internet Users Community of India (IUCI). He had also played a major role in setting up internet organizations like the Ethical Hackers Association.
Shammi Kapoor also maintained a website 'junglee.org.in' dedicated to the 'Kapoor family’.

In 2006,  he underwent dialysis three times a week. Irrepressible even then, this punishing regimen has failed to depress him. Rather, he said that he was thankful to God for giving him so much.

Tribute
=======

The Hindi film industry will never see such an era again," said writer, poet Javed Akhtar, echoing a sentiment of the Hindi film industry.

"When he is on screen it is very difficult to look at anyone else. He had a great sense of humour and a sense of rhythm, so important to the Hindi film industry. His contribution to the industry is quite considerable," said Tagore, who acted with him in her debut Hindi film, Kashmir Ki Kali.

Vyjantimala refers to Shammi as the King of Rhythms. “I cannot believe that the King of Rhythms has ceased to be.I always took pride in being a classical dancer of repute until I met Shammiji. I was quite astonished at the way he choreographed himself in the songBadanpe sitaarein lapete huye in Prince. The song was picturised in three takes. He is the only actor in India, who choreographed all his song sequences himself,” she said.

Story

Shekhar (Shammi Kapoor) and his sister Mala (Shashikala) have been brought up in an atmosphere of rigid discipline where the sound of laughter and love are unknown. Their mother (Lalita Pawar) has raised them in the shadow of her late husband, a wealthy businessman known for his rules and stern principles.

Shekhar has just returned from three years abroad, where he successfully expanded the company (and their wealth). He is unsmiling, demanding and unkind. Mala, on the other hand, is cheerful and sweet, although she has to suppress these traits at home.

She has fallen in love with Jeevan (Anoop Kumar) and sneaks out to meet him; she knows her brother and mother won’t approve because he works as a mere clerk in their office.

Shekhar’s mother has fixed his marriage to a Princess, which will take place in a few months when he returns from a business trip to Kashmir.

They dont know that “the Princess” is a fraud, and her father and brother have amassed a great deal of debt. They are planning to marry her off to Shekhar for his money.

In the meantime, Mala and Jeevan have secretly gotten married themselves, .Manager Sahab has his suspicions about Jeevan.

He goes to Shekhar and his mother and tells them that he fears Mala may be going astray. They decide that Mala will accompany Shekhar to Kashmir.

In beautiful Kashmir on his first morning Shekhar is accidentally hit with a snowball thrown by the local doctor’s daughter Rajkumari (Saira Banu). He yells at her but she doesn’t care much.

Mala has not been feeling well, and goes to see the doctor. He gives her shocking news about that she is six month pregnant. She tries to commit suicide but is stopped by Rajkumari. Mala tells Raj her predicament, and Raj assures her that she’ll help soften up Mala’s scary brother. She goes to meet him and is not too surprised to see Shekhar. Raj decides on a strategy to deal with him.

She makes him buy flowers for poor Mala when she takes him to visit. She and her father keep Mala’s condition a secret from him; the doctor merely says that she needs rest.

As Mala’s due date draws near, Raj tricks him into going on a “pilgrimage” to Sheshnag to get him out of the way. When she finds out that the area has been hit with a severe snow storm she goes after him, but he decides to go ahead to Sheshnag anyway, and makes her go with him as punishment for her mischief.

They get caught in the storm and find shelter in a cabin. As the days pass and the storm rages on, Shekhar realizes that he’s fallen in love with her.

Then finally one morning they wake up to clear skies and no wind; relieved and excited, he shouts “Yahoo!”This is followed by the classic “Chahe Koi Mujhe Junglee Kahe”.

Meanwhile Mala delievers a baby boy. When they come back they got the news. Mala is astounded by the change in her brother.

Raj’s father is not too happy about their prolonged absence together, but Shekhar explains that they want to get married. A telegram arrives from his mother summoning him and Mala back to Bombay.Mala leaves the baby in Raj and the doctor’s care.

There, trouble awaits in the form of a telegram from Shekhar’s future father-in-law, the “Raja Sahab.” Shekhar is too afraid to tell his mother about Raj. Mala is pining for her baby, but Jeevan, too, is afraid to face her mother. His mother sends Shekhar off to see his prospective in-laws. They put on a good party in order to impress him. Miss Suku (Helen) performs.

Shekhar puts his plan into action and convinces the princess and her family that he is crazy. He joins Miss Suku on stage, flirting with her and humiliating the princess.

The princess (Azra) is not pleased, and they all agree that he is clearly crazy; but her father and brother don’t care much as they are only interested in his fortune.

In any case, Shekhar soon discovers that he’s not escaping the Princess and her family so easily. They come to Bombay at the same time as Raj and her father arrive—all to finalize weddings with Shekhar.Shekhar knows that his mother will never approve of his marriage with Rajkumari.

After some drama and fighting all misundrestanding is cleared and finally Shekhar's mother accepts Raj as her daughter-in-law and Jeevan as son-in-law.

Story
Pritam (Shammi Kapoor) has an advanced degree but is unable to find a job. His mother (Protima Devi) is suffering from tuberculosis and he’s increasingly desperate to find a job. He applies for a tutoring position in Darjeeling, but discovers to his dismay that he has to be at least fifty years old in order to get the job.

When the doctor tells Pritam that his mother must be cared for in a sanatorium or she’ll die, he decides to take the job; he’ll pretend to be old.

With his mother tucked away in a good hospital, he heads to Darjeeling. On the way he sees two girls (Kalpana and Parveen Choudhary) dancing.

Pritam reaches his new employer’s home, only to be greeted by the sounds of “Yahoo” song from Junglee, and two young boys sliding down the staircase bannisters.

Then two of the girls Nina and Rita, he had seen dancing come rushing in. They’ve spotted their aunt’s car approaching and everyone disappears from sight.

When Sita Devi (Lalita Pawar) arrives, Pritam introduces himself as Professor Khanna. She is suspicious of the “elderly” Professor’s youthful skin; Pritam makes up a story about studying yoga from the original Sanskrit teachings.

She’s impressed and informs him that he will teach her two young nephews as well as teaching the girls Sanskrit.

But he does not know Sanskrit and starts learning  himself.
Nina and Rita make several attempts to get rid of the Professor but he survives each time.

Pritam goes into town to order a new reversible jacket made—with one side for his old man act, and the other for his time off when he can wander around sans disguise.

Nina is there, although she doesn’t recognize Pritam, but he takes her dupatta by mistake as he leaves. When he finds it, he waits for her outside and they strike sparks off each other.

Sita Devi rules the house very strictly. Her attitude towards clothing, food, studying and punctuality is very strict. Nina and Rita hate her, but the Professor suggests to them that she’s strict because she loves them, and points out that maybe she never got married because she was too busy raising them.He praises her beauty. Nina gets another idea for getting the Professor fired. She tells her aunt about him.But whole plan backfires.

Sita Devi is secretly quite flattered. Nobody’s ever admired her looks before.

Pritam likes Nina and meets her in town at the tailor’s again. At last she also starts liking him.

Professor's honesty wins Sita Devi's trust and she asks him to represent Nina’s interests in a court case in Bombay—Sita Devi’s brother left his substantial property to his eldest daughter, but there’s a dispute.

In Bombay, he meets Sita Devi and Nina as himself telling them that he is the Professor’s nephew.Pritam romances Nina as himself and continues his Professor act for Nina and Sita Devi, who is now quite smitten with the Professor. She announces Pritam ana Nina's wedding and her friend annonces Sita Devi and Professor's wedding.

At last Pritam decides to reveal the truth to them but Rita becomes pregnant and her boyfriend  Ramesh refuses to marry her then she tries to commit suicide by jumping into river. Professor jumps into the water and saves her . But his beards gets off and his secret is now open. Everybody is shocked to see that Pritam is the Professor. Interesting Facts

* The film became a hit and remains popular to this day. What is unusual is that although it is a murder mystery, it continues to draw repeat audiences even though the identity of the murderer is no longer a secret. Teesri Manzil was the last time Shammi starred in a Nasir Hussain film.

* Teesri Manzil was also the last Nasir Hussain film in which Mohammed Rafi sang all the songs. By Yaadon Ki Baraat, Kishore Kumar had temporarily become the dominant singer in Hussain's movies, but Rafi always had a special place in Hussain's films and would later win major awards for the song "Kya hua tera wada" in Hussain's Hum Kisi Se Kum Nahin (1977).

* Nasir Hussain produced and wrote the film under his home banner. He approached Vijay Anand to direct and his older brother Dev Anand to star in it. Dev was unavailable, but Vijay came on board to direct and edit the film.

* Nasir Hussain then cast Shammi Kapoor who had earlier starred in Hussain's two big hits, Tumsa Nahin Dekha (1957) and Dil Deke Dekho, which introduced Asha Parekh.

* Asha had starred in two more hits for Hussain Jab Pyar Kisise Hota Hai (1961) and Phir Wohi Dil Laya Hoon (1963).

* Thus, the newcomer for this film would be music composer R.D. Burman(son of music composer S.D. Burman), and he would create phenomenal music for this film. He would compose for all of Hussain's films until Zabardast(1985).R.D. Burman gave credit to lyricist Majrooh Sultanpuri for recommending him to Hussain, and both of them created unforgettable songs for Teesri Manzil.

* The song picturisations were outstanding, with Helen dancing to "Oh Haseena zulfonwaali". Songs like "Aaja aaja" had a rock n' roll base and were extremely popular.
